Common Errors While Opening Exchange Management Console - "How to Fix Them"

Connecting to the remote server failed with the following error message: The WinRM client cannot process the request.  It cannot determine the content type of the HTTP response from the destination computer.  The content type is absent or invalid.  For more information, see the about_Remote_Troubleshooting Help topic.  It was running the command 'Discover-ExchangeServer -IseWIA $true -SuppressError $true'.


The WinRM client received an HTTP server error status (500), but the Remote service did not include any other information about the cause of the failure. For more information, see the about_Remote_Troubleshooting Help topic. It was running the command 'Discover-ExchangeServer -UseWIA $true -SuppressError $true'.

Cause :-
Missing parameter in Applicationhost.config file / IIS was reinstalled / Configuration Mismatch

Fix 1 -

Make Sure IISAdmin Service is up and running (Automatic and Started)

Fix 2 -

Note :-Make a copy of Applicationhost.config files before making the changes.
Firstly we need to make sure we have all the CAS pre-requisites are installed for eg - (Basic, Digest, Windows Auth) Please refer to Microsoft Technet to get them configured

Open Applicationhost.config file (Elevated)
Path - C:\Windows\System32\Inetsrv\Config

Make sure we have the following line added under "globalmodules" if its missing -

<add name=”WSMan” image=="%windir%\system32\wsmsvc.dll" />

Open Services Console - Restart IIS Admin Service / Perform iisreset from evlevated Command prompt.

 Fix 3 -

Open IIS Manager
Make sure the ports are Binding with All Unassigned as IP Address settings

Fix 4 -

Make sure WINRM IIS Extension is installed

 - Start Server Manager
 - Click on the Features node
 - Click on "Add Features"
 - Select "WinRM IIS Extension"

Fix 5 -

Make sure ExchangeInstallDir path in web.config is correct

Open IIS - Explore Powershell Virtual Directory
Locate Web.config file and replace
%ExchangeInstallDir% with  C:\Programfiles\Microsoft\ExchangeServer\V14\
Run IISreset

Fix 6 -

Make sure there is no Host Headers added on the website in IIS

Fix 7 -

Open Server Manager  - Under web server  - Add Roles and Services (Add the features mentioned below if they are not installed)

Common HTTP Features:HTTP Redirection
WebDAV Publishing

Application Development:ASP
Server Side Includes

URL Authorization

Performance:Dynamic Content Compression.

Management Tools:
IIS Management Scripts and Tools.
Management Service.
Do an IISreset after adding these features.
